Information on the village of Stichill, near Kelso in Scotland.
Born 21st July 1928, he succeeded to the title in 1961 on the death of his father. On 5th September 1953 he married Jacqueline Marie Gladwell, only child of Wilfrid Hugh Gladwell of La Rocque, Jersey.
After education at Sherbourne, he entered the Army as a Second Lieutenant in 1946, and having served in various Commando Brigades, rose to the rank of Lieutenant General and Commandant General of the Royal Marines.
On 17th October 1981, he was the victim of a booby-trap car-bomb blast when leaving his home in London. As a result he was seriously injured, and lost a leg.
He was Knighted in 1982.
He was awarded a Hon DSc of the City University in 1982, a Hon LLD of Exeter University in 1994. He is also an Hon Admiral of the Texas Navy.
He is currently President of the Royal Marines Association.
